Stem cells application

Stem cells are used in regenerative medicine for restoration of tissues and organs, which cells died as a result of aging, stresses, mechanical (trauma), physical (radiation), chemical (poisoning) damage, or as the result of disease.

Scientific research of recent years opens the potential of umbilical cord blood stem cells application in medicine:

  • “Umbilical cord blood cells acquire characteristics of liver cells” (Transplant. Proc., 2007). The results obtained show that umbilical cord blood may find clinical application as stem cells source for liver restoration in patients suffered with chronic liver insufficiency or acute liver function disorder.
  • “The umbilical cord blood cells are capable to transform into insulin-producing cells” (BBRC, 2007). This research opens the possibility of stem cells in treatment of pancreatic diabetes connected with insulin production insufficiency.
  • “Administration of umbilical blood cells facilitates restoration after stroke” (Stroke, 2001). Authors concluded that transplantation of the stem cells from umbilical cord blood may find its application in treatment of patients that survived stroke.
  • Stem cells of umbilical cord blood against lateral sclerosis” (Stem Cell Res., 2003). Amniotrophic lateral sclerosis is the disease where locomotion function has progressively suffered due to diffuse damage of motor (motional) neurons. Substitution of affected neurons with the cells that are produced from umbilical cord blood stem cells has become the basis for non-invasive (without operation) treatment of the diseases of central nervous system.
  • “Umbilical cord blood contains cells – precursors of neurons” (Cell Transplantation, 2002). According to the data of the research carried out at the University of St. Louis, USA, there is a population of stem cells in umbilical cord blood capable to differentiate into neurons and neuroglial cells. The research proves assumption that umbilical cord blood stem cells transplantation can find its application in treatment of central nervous system diseases.
  • “Stem cells from umbilical cord blood in spine cord injures” (Stem Cell Res., 2003). Umbilical cord blood stem cells transplantation facilitates rehabilitation of spine cord after traumas. Such conclusion was made by the group of scientists of the University and Medical College (USA). They proved that stem cells are capable to install into affected zones and to eliminate the defects of spine cord in its traumas.
  • “A child was cured from leucosis with the help of the cells of own umbilical cord blood” (Pediatrics, 2007). In clinical work published by the specialists of the Department of pediatric Hematology and Oncology (Illinois, USA) the results of umbilical cord blood stem cells application for the treatment of acute leucosis (blood tumor) are presented. The patient – 3-years old girl underwent the transplantation of her own stem cells after chemo- and radiotherapy. Due to her parents precaution the umbilical cord blood was collected during delivery and it was preserved in one of the stem cells bank. Two years passed after transplantation and the girl is healthy and feels good.

Today the range of diseases where umbilical cord blood stem cells transplantation is performed expands significantly. Leading world banks attribute to such diseases:

  • bone marrow insufficiency syndrome
  • diseases of immune system
  • diseases of blood system
  • malformations and heredital metabolic disorders
  • pancreatic diabetes
  • cardiac diseases
  • liver diseases
  • traumas including those with spine cord injure
  • muscular dystrophy and other severe diseases
  • oncological diseases of different localization
  • leucosis

UMBILICAL CORD BLOOD IS AN INVALIABLE SOURCE OF STEM CELLS

Aging process is connected with depletion of stem cells reserve, which is responsible for constant renovation of all the cells of growing and mature organism. Having saved this resource in a form of umbilical cord blood stem cells it is possible not only to significantly increase the live span, but to provide you with its main characteristic – youth.

ADVANTAGES OF UMBILICAL BLOOD STEM CELLS:

  • their ability for division is 8-10 times higher than in stem cells of the adult organism bone marrow;
  • probability of their matching for family members treatment (for sisters and brothers) is very high;
  • collected at birth they may be used at any moment and in case of necessity will by 100% suit the child;
  • procedure of umbilical blood collection is absolutely safe and painless;
  • it is performed without contact with mother and child both in physiologic delivery and in Cesarean birth.

Despite all advantages of umbilical blood stem cells discovery it has one “but” – it is possible to collect umbilical cord blood only once in a lifetime– at child birth.

It is up to your decision, whether umbilical blood and placenta undergo utilization in maternal hospital or your baby receives a unique biological insurance for long and healthy life and you get an invaluable biological material of your own placenta.
