Opportunities for multidisciplinary collaboration have never been more
important if the development of effective regenerative therapies for heart disease is to be
realised, according to the first paper in this week's Lancet Series on stem cells. The
breaking down of traditional barriers between individual areas of specialisation, from
cardiovascular medicine to device technology, and the creation of interdisciplinary teams
from both academia and the private sector will be key.

Stem cells taken from the back of a human eye have restored some vision to
blind rats, according to researchers. They say the findings could help treat blindness,
caused by glaucoma, if similar results can be repeated in humans. The study, published in
the journal Stem Cells Translational Medicine, used the cells to form new nerves in the eye.
These hooked up with the existing nerves, restoring sight.

Donating a kidney may save a person's life - but only if the conditions are
precise. Kidney donors must be related and immunologically matched to their donors –
and even then, the recipient must take a lifetime of anti-rejection medications, which
don’t guarantee the organ won't be rejected.

A small pilot study indicates that following up an imperfectly matched organ
transplant with an infusion of the donor's stem cells may free recipients from a lifetime of
anti-rejection drugs.

It turns out that mantra is not only the key to real-estate value, but also
to the therapeutic value of stem cells. Researchers have been trying for years to coax
various types of stem cells into areas throughout the body where they can help make repairs,
but have had little success beyond bone-marrow transplants. One of the drawbacks has been
getting enough of the right cells to the right place -- and getting them to stay put and
thrive.

In a study to be presented today at the Society for Maternal-Fetal
Medicine's annual meeting, The Pregnancy Meeting, in Dallas, Texas, researchers will report
that early transplantation of human placenta-derived mesenchymal stem cells into the lateral
ventricles of neonatal rats with birth-related brain damage is possible, and that the donor
cells can survive and migrate in the recipient's brain. The study was designed to have the
rat's brain damage mimic brain injury in infants with very low birth weight.

A University of Minnesota-led research team has proposed a mechanism for the
control of whether embryonic stem cells continue to proliferate and stay stem cells, or
differentiate into adult cells like brain, liver or skin. The work has implications in two
areas. In cancer treatment, it is desirable to inhibit cell proliferation. But to grow adult
stem cells for transplantation to victims of injury or disease, it would be desirable to
sustain proliferation until a sufficient number of cells have been produced to make a usable
organ or tissue.

University of Illinois researchers determined that an adult stem cell

Successful testing in mice paves the way toward human trials for patients
with osteoporosis A research team led by UC Davis Health System scientists has developed a
novel technique to enhance bone growth by using a molecule which, when injected into the
bloodstream, directs the body's stem cells to travel to the surface of bones. Once these
cells are guided to the bone surface by this molecule, the stem cells differentiate into
bone-forming cells and synthesize proteins to enhance bone growth. The study, which was
published online today in Nature Medicine, used a mouse model of osteoporosis to demonstrate
a unique treatment approach that increases bone density and prevents bone loss associated
with aging and estrogen deficiency.
