Umbilical cord blood can restore damaged knees

The umbilical cord blood contains stem cells that can give rise to new cartilage or bone tissue. That is why еру scientists have high hopes for the treatment of osteoarthritis using umbilical cord blood stem cells injections.

Osteoarthritis is one of the most common diseases, when the destruction of joint cartilage occurs. About 350 million people worldwide suffer from arthritis. Osteoarthritis causes severe pain, discomfort in joints, limitation of motor activity of patients and can cause disability. One of the most pressing problems of modern orthopedics is the treatment of osteoarthritis of the knee joint.

Such methods of treating osteoarthritis as anti-inflammatory drugs, chondroprotectors, physiotherapy, or even surgery do not provide the desired therapeutic effect. Therefore, in the last decade, scientists pay increasing attention to the potential of stem cells to restore joint cartilage in patients with osteoarthritis, primarily of the knee joints.

In the arsenal of modern medicine the following ethical sources of adult stem cells are available: umbilical cord blood, umbilical cord, amniotic fluid, placental blood and placenta tissue, bone marrow, peripheral blood, and adipose tissue.

The ideal source of stem cells for treating osteoarthritis is umbilical cord blood. The umbilical cord blood is rich in mesenchymal stem cells. Mesenchymal stem cells have a prominent anti-inflammatory effect, inhibiting the immune response. Also, mesenchymal stem cells of the umbilical cord blood are capable to transform into cartilage or bone tissue cells, thus restoring affected joints.

The Ukraine’s first Cryobank of the Institute of Cell Therapy owns methods for cultivation of mesenchymal stem cells of perinatal tissues (umbilical cord blood, umbilical cord, placenta) into cartilage and bone cells.
