Female stem cells better treat inflammation

Recent studies have shown an incredibly interesting evidence that mesenchymal stem cells from female donors are more effective in treating inflammatory diseases than cells from male donors. This is because stem cells from female donors are characterized by a higher expression of the specific protein TSG-6, which has an anti-inflammatory effect.

More than 30 years ago, scientists discovered that bone marrow, umbilical cord blood, placenta and some other human tissues contain a special type of stem cells, called mesenchymal.

Mesenchymal stem cells are multipotent cells that can easily give rise to bone, cartilage, muscle, and adipose tissue. Mesenchymal stem cells are also commonly used during bone marrow or cord blood transplantation, as they stimulate the engraftment of donor hematopoietic stem cells. In laboratory practice, mesenchymal stem cells are used for culturing other cells, that is, in procedures aimed at increasing the number of the latter or transforming them into cells of the desired population.

However, the most promising effect of mesenchymal stem cells is their ability to suppress inflammation. That is why mesenchymal stem cells are increasingly used in the treatment of diseases caused by excessive immune response (rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, non-specific ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, etc.). The Food and Drug Agency (FDA) in the United States has already approved more than 800 clinical trials to study the efficacy or to improve various mesenchymal stem cell treatment regimens. Given accuracy of FDA in testing clinical trials protocols, this demonstrates the proven safety and efficacy of mesenchymal stem cell preparations.
